I was watching CNN talk about the Euro 2008 game with Germany vs. Spain and just wondered why we call it soccer and the NFL football. This has probably been discussed and debated somewhere plenty of times.

With my limited historic knowledge and experience with how these came about, wouldn't it just be easier to call the NFL football soccer and have futball be football? Seriously, American football doesn't even describe what football is. They don't use their FOOT to play the game. It's closer to rugby probably. I mean, I know why it's called baseball. The player touch the "bases." In volleyball, you volley the ball up. In basketball, you shoot the ball into a basket. And for golf, I don't actually know why it's called golf lol. Now, what is soccer? See if we just had futball be football we wouldn't need to have the word American football. All we need would be the word soccer instead of (American) football to replace it. haha.

It's not like it will change, but I was just pondering this. NFL is pretty big in the United States and is pretty much football. It'll be hard to call it something else now. But, pretty much everyone knows which football is which by the context when we do talk about it. So we (humans) are smart like that being able to figure it out. haha ok.
